Happy Hips

SAT Date: 08/05/2017 - 08/05/2017 From: 9:00 am - 11:00 am

Usually when we talk about muscle memory, we are referring to the patterns that become ingrained in the body through continuous use and activity, but some yogis believe that we store memories, emotions, and even past traumas in our muscles as well. They say that by releasing the muscles in and around the hips and pelvis (say, in a yoga practice), we can bring on emotional and spiritual break-throughs. Maybe you buy it, maybe you don’t, but whether you’re a super-active runner or a semi-sedentary desk-jockey, chances are your hips could use some relief and release. This workshop will focus on releasing deep tension through a vigorous, targeted warm-up and standing series, and then a long yin-style surrender series. Poses will engage and release the hip/pelvis/2nd chakra area (flexors, ab/adductors, psoas, etc.).

Connecting the Limbs of Yoga

FRI Date: 10/20/2017 - 10/20/2017 From: 5:30 pm - 9:30 pm

In our 200 hour training we learn of the 8 fold path of yoga consists of yama, niyama, asana, pranayama, pratyahara, dharana, dhyana and samadhi. We learn intellectually that all of these limbs are very much integrated, but for the sake of convenience they are often deconstructed as independent components. This course will explore how pranayama (breath control) and dhyana (meditation) independently function and how when all of the limbs merge together to support and create the Yoga of devotion (bhakti).

Come prepared to learn how to practice and how to teach various pranayama and meditation techniques. We will explore how asana can support pranayama and meditation and how pranayama and meditation can support asana.

"The Yoga of Breath: A Step by Step Guide to Pranayama" by Richard Rosen

“A tree has roots, a trunk, branches, leaves, bark, sap, flowers, and fruits. Each one of these components has a separate identity, but each component cannot by itself become a tree. It is the same with Yoga. As all the parts put together become a tree, so all the 8 stages put together form Yoga.” - B.K.S. Iyengar

Connecting the Limbs of Yoga

SAT Date: 10/21/2017 - 10/21/2017 From: 9:00 am - 7:00 pm

Yoga for Healthy Aging

FRI Date: 11/03/2017 - 11/03/2017 From: 5:30 pm - 9:30 pm

In this workshop, we will be exploring what really happens to our bodies during the normal aging process. We will look at the anatomical and physiological changes that are occurring in the 50+ age group and how best to support these changes within our yoga practice. The information discussed will be supported with current evidence- based studies from both medical and yoga literature.

Topics addressed will include how the body normally ages; discussion on common medical conditions; how to design an appropriate and safe yoga class for special populations such as osteoporosis, arthritis, balance issues, joint replacements; and the use of mudra and pranayama practices to support healthy aging.

This workshop will be interactive with several group practices lead by the instructor focusing on class design for healthy aging yoga. Participants will also have the opportunity to work in groups on case studies to help facilitate the learning process.

At the conclusion of this workshop, participants will have a better understanding of how to design and modify their yoga classes/own practices to best utilize yoga for healthy aging and to work with special senior populations.

Laurie Riggins, DPT teaches Align & Restore Yoga at Vibe Yoga & Pilates Studio and Mindful Body Yoga Therapy at IU Health, a program she developed for those with cancer and chronic disease.
