Stand Up Paddle Board Yoga

SUN Date: 05/26/2019 - 05/26/2019 From: 8:15 am - 10:30 am

SUP Yoga Experience Overview:

In this 2+ hour experience, you will learn paddle board basics: launching, docking, turning and slowing down. You will also learn how to stand up- but if that is holding you back, don’t let it! You can paddle from a seated or kneeling position! You must, however, be able to swim.

As a student, you can expect time to paddle, the opportunity to play in the various yoga poses, and a floating meditation. This class is perfect for any yogi, no matter what their SUP experience as most of the yoga poses have a lower center of gravity and multiple contact points with the board, and modifications are offered through out the practice. However, being mindful of your transitions is essential in this practice and is a great reminder for even the most experienced yogi!

The beauty of this practice speaks for itself as soon as you launch onto the water. The playlist is different every class depending on which birds choose to sing. Expect to see blue herons and kingfishers. If you’re lucky, you’ll hear an owl or two!

*Boards, paddles, anchors and life jackets are provided and included in cost.

**This class meets in Griffy parking lot by Griffy Lake at 8:15am. We will have a short land lesson then launch around 8:30am and return to shore by 10:30am.

Instructions + Additional Information:

-Please come with the proper amount of sunscreen already applied.

-Sunglasses are great for the paddle but more challenging during the yoga practice, but it’s up to you.

-The less you carry with you, the better your experience.

-Your instructor will carry your car keys.

-Leave everything else in the car except a water bottle.

-Each board comes equipped with a bungee strap in front. Under there you can stow your water and flip flops.

-We practice barefoot! Just like the yoga mat.

In this series, we will explore various practices and rituals to work intentionally with each right.

This month, we will take a deep dive into the right to FEEL. The second chakra governs our ability to get things moving in order for us to embody the creative powers that lie within us all. Michael Johnson has been a full-time yoga instructor for nearly two decades and a teacher trainer for 15 years. He has travelled to India and studied many styles and traditions from Aṣṭāṅga Vinyāsa, Bhakti, Karma, Jñāna, Jīvamukti, Rāja, and Restorative to Yin. In addition to teaching ten weekly classes, He is a lead instructor for Asheville Yoga Center's 200hr Teacher Training and 300hr Advanced Training Programs.

"Michael Johnson’s classes are a beautiful mix of music, exploration of the yoga sutras, well-sequenced asana practice, and devotion to the highest virtues of humanity- and peppered with tidbits of science and humor. In my opinion, it is a well-rounded experience which gently guides the students into an exploration of what it can feel like to navigate yoga and life in the modern world with integrity, health and compassion." - Dana N.
