Calling Your Students Into Action – The Intersection of Yoga & ServiceFRI Date: 01/22/2021 - 01/23/2021 From: 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm
Together, we’ll explore the following questions:
- How do politics, activism, or service work fold into our yoga practice? Does it belong in the yoga classroom - why or why not?
- If the goal of yoga is unification, is there space for different politics, ideologies, opinions? Is it better to remain neutral?
- Who am I to teach about any of these things? What is most important to me? How do I create an environment for transformation?
In Part 1, we explore the yoga practice from an individual standpoint, getting curious about your own integrity and authenticity. Does your yoga practice align with how you are showing up in your relationships and interactions with the world? Are their areas of your life that are incongruent with what you say you believe or teach? Or does this conversation make you incredibly uncomfortable and do you avoid it all together? Finally, are there aspects of your practice /service that you feel called to share but are unsure how?
In Part 2 , we examine the intersection of your personal practice and your teaching. Learn how to invite your students into deep inquiry, holding discomfort and allowing for growth. Explore how to lead your class through an embodied experience that leads to both personal insight and collective healing. Using grounding techniques, trauma-informed skills, the chakra system, intuition and more, Maura will demonstrate her own methodology that creates an environment for personal revelation in her students - each weekend will have a full practice followed by reflection and group conversation. We’ll also spend time working in dyads and small groups.
Students can expect to leave with a deepened or renewed commitment to their own practice as well as the foundations for teaching an empowering and engaging class that calls their students into action.
Maura Manzo has trained extensively with Off the Mat into the World founders and faculty, specifically Seane Corn, Hala Khouri and Nikki Myers, around trauma informed practices and the intersection of social justice and yoga. She has studied trauma-informed care with Lakeside Global institute and is currently enrolled in Villanova University's Peace & Justice Graduate Studies Program. Maura is the co-founder of the award-winning studio, Yoga Home, outside of Philadelphia. She was also the personal recipient of Philadelphia Magazine's Best of Awards 2014 - Best Yoga Podcast.
Maura’s deep commitment to building community shows up in all that she offers. Over the last 10 years, she has raised nearly $500k for different organization she has partnered with including OTM, (for HIV/AIDS South Africa), buildOn (building schools in 5 different countries) and most recently, Hope for Haiti.
