The Art of Assisting

Learning how to effectively offer hands on assists and adjustments can add another layer to powerfully planned classes. Physical touch in the form of hands on yoga assists can help build awareness, ensure ideal alignment, and can facilitate trust and connection between yoga teachers and students. An effectively applied assist can help students reach new potential in poses or can help support ease and surrender in the practice. During this weekend assisting immersion, you will explore:

Yoga in the Wood Shop

Take your practice out of the studio walls as you unroll your mat amongst barrels and beer. The Wood Shop Brewery is a place to explore, relax, and experience something new -- a natural venue for yoga on a Sunday at noon. For the first hour, find your flow as you connect breath with energizing asana (suitable for newbies and experienced yogis alike).

After you’ve saluted the sun, say “Salute” to your fellow yogis with a complimentary beer of your choice. You are encouraged to mix and mingle following the class for as long as you would like. Afterwards, head next door to the Brewpub for a bite to eat on the patio. Additional pints and growler fills will also be available.


We suggest arriving at least 10 minutes before the class to check in and prepare for class. Class will begin promptly at 12:00pm and end at 1:00pm.

Beginners are encouraged to join! Please bring a yoga mat, water bottle and wear comfortable clothing.

Gong Bath

Gong Bath is your time to relax and simply be. Class begins with light stretching and breathing exercises followed by shavasana (lying down) for the remainder of class. The gong is a very powerful tool for healing, stress relief, deep relaxation, meditation and spiritual growth. The gong takes you out of ordinary everyday five-sense reality, into the expanded consciousness of the right brain, where extraordinary things can happen. Stresses are removed and life force energy is revived and rejuvenated. In this class you will enter a cocoon of gong sound and experience the beautiful and varied effects of this ancient spiritual tool.

Restorative Yoga Training

Welcome to the Vibe Yoga 4 Month 200 hour Teacher Training Course!

Over the next 4 months, you will learn the foundation of teaching an “open level” power vinyasa yoga class. By the end of the training, you will have the resources to lead a safe and meaningful yoga class and a strong foundation to begin your journey as a yoga teacher.

By the end of the course you will be able to:

-->Prepare a 60 minute yoga class.

-->Teach the class with proper breath, posture, and anatomical cues.

-->Provide accurate demonstrations and workshop posture breakdowns, assist your students as needed.

-->Clearly convey your knowledge of yoga philosophy to support your students in asana, pranayama, meditation, and general guidance through the practice.

-->Understand basic anatomy and physiology relevant to yoga to support your cues and explanations.

-->Explain yoga systems and terminology including but not limited to the Kosha System, Chakra System, and concepts surrounding the eight limbs of yoga.

-->This course will cover the entry level materials that prepare you for the 300 hour advanced studies opportunities that follow if you choose.

How to Teach Basics

These categories can mean different things to both teacher and student as we all have a unique experience with the practice of yoga and all of its layers. During our 500 hour teacher training we will go deeper into the discussion, practice, and methods of how to teach to each level while staying committed to the needs of the individual.

In this module you will expand your knowledge on how to:
-sequence for the basic level
-instruct a basic level student
-incorporate props into a basic level class
-deconstruct postures and teach the essence of the pose
-assist for the basic level
-participate in a basic practices using chair, wall, and studio props

Holy Roller

In an asana practice, the physical work is that of activating muscle and soft tissue. We use the shapes to train, explore, engage, even ‘stretch’ the body. This is an important element of the practice and a part of that healing. There is beautiful and valuable work in there; a potential for growth and a possibility to be and do more. However as thoughtful and attentive as we may be in movement, there are still patterns, habits, old beliefs and practices held tight in the tissue under the skin.

The Holy Roller class is a way to bring the therapeutic practice of Self Myofascial Release (SMR) to our yoga mat and practice. Simply defined, SMR is a method of bodywork through which tools are used to develop greater ranges of motion and mobility throughout the entire physical form. The effects of this technique are translated through the muscle fiber, the connective tissues surrounding and investing the muscle, nerve, CNS (central nervous system) and even skin and adipose tissue.

Core and Pelvic Floor

This weekend is about putting many of those puzzle pieces together.
We will explore anatomy and exercises of/for the pelvis and core. As we integrate
the information we will see how they play out differently in each body because our
personal histories and experiences differ. In contrast, we will study and discuss
yoga history and philosophies as a way to come to a deeper understanding of who
we, as individual embodied beings, are in the world and in our own bodies.
As all of these pieces, perspectives, and paths come together we create an incredibly
rich and diverse experience with ourselves and in relationship to others.

Connecting the Limbs of Yoga

In our 200 hour training we learn of the 8 fold path of yoga consists of yama, niyama, asana, pranayama, pratyahara, dharana, dhyana and samadhi. We learn intellectually that all of these limbs are very much integrated, but for the sake of convenience they are often deconstructed as independent components. This course will explore how pranayama (breath control) and dhyana (meditation) independently function and how when all of the limbs merge together to support and create the Yoga of devotion (bhakti).


Come prepared to learn how to practice and how to teach various pranayama and meditation techniques. We will explore how asana can support pranayama and meditation and how pranayama and meditation can support asana.

Sanskrit 101

Want a comprehensive introduction to the language of yoga in one weekend? In this course you will learn to read and write the Sanskrit alphabet, properly pronounce yoga postures, sing sacred mantras and read texts with precision.  The name Sanskrit means "sanctified", "refined" and "consecrated".  It has has been regarded as the 'high' language and is the classical language of India.  Spend the weekend finding familiarity with this ancient language.
Michael Johnson has been a full-time yoga instructor for nearly two decades and a teacher trainer for 15 years. He has travelled to India and studied many styles and traditions from Aṣṭāṅga Vinyāsa, Bhakti, Karma, Jñāna, Jīvamukti, Rāja, and Restorative to Yin. In addition to teaching ten weekly classes, He is a lead instructor for Asheville Yoga Center's 200hr Teacher Training and 300hr Advanced Training Programs.
